Tbilisi City Hall commission for 2016 edition of Tbilisoba Festival on recently renovated Agmashenebeli avenue. New York based Georgian artists Uta Bekaia and Levan Mindiashvili were commissioned to create installations and performances for all available windows (53 in total). Fantasy and imagination merged with the romantic past of this particular street and its historical buildings, create setting to celebrate our city’s annual event. As artists had put themselves: “We wanted to accentuate the city we always loved and the city Tbilisi always was – cosmopolitan, multicultural, vibrant, romantic and mysterious. The city with 1500 years of history that always looks into the future recreating and re-imaging itself.” Among their original designs, Bekaia Mindiashvili duo had included works of several other local artists and fashion designers.
This project is organized in collaboration with Popiashvili Gvaberidze Window Project who pioneered the use of commercial windows to display contemporary art and design. For Tbilisoba 2016 Popiashvili Gvaberidze Window Project dedicated several spaces exclusively to emerging contemporary Georgian art.
During the run of the festival static window installations will be animated by live performances and video projections.
